Pictures of the Week: February 29 - March 6, 2016

dairy-fire-page-jpg-1

In February and March of 1948, Page Dairy Company at Wade Street and Knapp Street in Toledo was rocked by two explosions. The first, on February 20, 1948, claimed the lives of two employees and injured 25 others. There were 300 employees working when ammonia fumes exploded. Police and private ambulances transported the victims to St. Vincent, Mercy and East Side Hospitals. This Toledo Blade photo was taken on Feb. 20, the day of the first explosion. It shows milk cans scattered about the floor while firemen poured water on flaming and smoldering equipment on the building’s first floor. The explosion twisted machinery, blew a hole through a main wall, sent milk cans flying, and broke out the building’s windows.
