VLT-Fourth-of-July-1

The United States adopting the Declaration of Independence 241 years ago resulted in our annual celebration of being an independent nation. Some celebrate by cooking, attending a baseball game, or watching the sky being decorated with patriotic pyrotechnics. Toledo has a long history of participating in this celebration by putting on a light show for the community. This photo was taken by Blade photographer Don Simmons on July 2, 1989. As Nancy Michoff, Colleen Regulski, and Thomas Regulski, from left, patiently waited on the fireworks they were greeted by rain. The trio used umbrellas to shield themselves. Earlier that day before the fireworks, officials weren’t confident the rain would stop in time. Rain and moist air would affect the firing devices, especially because the fireworks were coordinated with music. Some attendees brought family and friends, and others utilized the scenery to create the perfect date night. An estimated 200,000 people were in attendance that night. Currently, the city’s annual fireworks display, Red, White, KABOOM, is ignited over the Maumee River.

Claire Meikle, with Medical Students for Choice, chalks the sidewalk during a rally outside Capitol Care Network Wednesday, June 28, 2017, in Toledo. The Ohio Senate voted Wednesday to pass Senate Bill 145, criminalizing the most common method of abortion used during women’s second trimester of pregnancy, called dilation and evacuation. The bill will go before the Ohio House. It includes an exception for cases in which the mother’s life is in danger but does not exempt cases of rape and incest. Capitol Care Network is the only remaining abortion provider in Lucas County. Several dozen people turned out to protest for and against abortion rights.
