explode-11-jpgAn-explosion-ripped-through

An explosion ripped through the Maumee Chemical plant at Oak and Front Streets in Toledo killing 10 and injuring 46. The May 10, 1962, blast caused widespread damage and the smoke could be seen as far away as Grand Rapids, Ohio. In this photo taken by Blade photographer Herral Long, firefighters were focusing streams of water on the plant, and nearby gas storage tanks. Pungent fumes permeated the air as smoke of varied colors – bright yellow, light gray, bluish-green, brown, pink, and white – mushroomed from the plant.
