James-Brown-2

This photo of Brown was taken at the Toledo Sports Arena by Toledo Blade photographer Jack Ackerman on Nov. 16, 1968. After that show, Brown sat down with The Blade for an hourlong interview. He explained that one of his goals was to prove to young blacks that while it’s a bit tougher to make it if you’re black, it can be done. “Look what I’ve got,” said Brown. “And I got it all on my own. I own the radio station where I used to shine shoes. I didn’t need the white man, and I didn’t need the government. Look what I started with! Nothing! If I could do it, you can do it.”
