HOT-fire-jpg-1

Monday Memories: Boiling Hot! About 25,000 creosoted railroad ties were destroyed in a spectacular fire at the Jennison-Wright Corp. plant in the 2000 block of Broadway in Toledo on Oct. 19, 1983. The stacked railroad ties were confined to an area 300 by 400 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 20 feet tall. Toledo Blade photographer Herral Long drew attention to the boiling water in the foreground, by simply writing a photo caption that said: “It was HOT.” The ties had an estimated value of $400,000 according to the Toledo Fire Department, which determined the spectacular blaze was the result of arson. Fire Chief William Winkle said the plant had been the target of vandals on previous occasions.
