Toledo firefighters Pat Nicely, left, and Tom Dugan water Promenade Park downtown with a 1939 pumper truck used primarily for public relations events.

Toledo Firefighters Union Local 92 bought the fully functional pumper from the Walbridge fire department 14 months ago.

It was pressed into service from 9 a.m. until 2.30 p.m. yesterday to water the grass in International and Promenade parks, which had been beaten down by the heavy foot traffic that comes with festivals and other gatherings.

The pumper was used so no active fire trucks would be taken out of service.
