S. Toledo man shot in hand during quarrel

9/10/2001

A man was shot in the left hand after a confrontation with a husband who was arguing with his estranged wife about 3 a.m. yesterday in South Toledo.

Robert Heckert, of 2241 South Ave., was treated at Medical College of Ohio Hospitals.

Police were called about 3:05 a.m. to the home of Maria Hersha, 1455 Western Ave., where Mr. Heckert, Mrs. Hersha, and seven others were playing cards.

Mrs. Hersha's estranged husband, Joe Hersha, of 2047 Price St., showed up, and an argument ensued. Police said Mr. Hersha tried to force Mrs. Hersha to leave, and Mr. Heckert intervened.

Police said Mr. Hersha pulled out a .380-caliber handgun and fired two or three times at Mr. Heckert, hitting him once. Witnesses said Mr. Hersha fled down an alley. Police found his vehicle at Champion Street and Walbridge Avenue but haven't found him.
