A repairman who took money from elderly customers for construction work but didn t provide the services was convicted Monday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

John W. Hawkins, 37, of 524 Nicholas St., pleaded no contest to one count each of grand theft and theft from the elderly.

He was found guilty by Judge Jack Zouhary, who scheduled sentencing for Jan. 24.

Prosecutors said a 78-year-old West Toledo man paid $850 to the defendant to repair the driveway of his home, and an Old West End couple gave $1,900 to Hawkins for materials to remodel their kitchen.

Instead, Hawkins kept the money and didn t provide or complete the services.
