Former Waterville chamber director admits to sexual conduct

12/15/2006

The former president of the Waterville Chamber of Commerce admitted in court this morning to having unwelcomed sexual conduct with a woman in August.

Douglas Hayward, 46, of Waterville, made the admission in Wood County Common Pleas Court in connection with an Aug. 12 incident at a Perrysburg motel.

As part of an agreement worked out between Mr. Hayward and the county prosecutor s office, the defendant was placed in a pre-trial diversion program and also ordered to pay $500 to a rape crisis center.

If he successfully completes the recommended treatment, a felony charge of sexual battery would be dismissed, authorities said.

Mr. Hayward was arrested by Perrysburg police on a rape charge two days after the incident, but it was dropped later that month after the victim was not available to testify at a court hearing.
