The accused companion of a 15-year-old Toledoan charged in the fatal shooting of a Toledo police detective yesterday received a trial date in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Sherman Powell, 19, of 772 Bush St., is to go on trial July 23. A motion-to-suppress hearing was set for July 3. He was sent back to the county jail in lieu of $140,000 bond after yesterday's pretrial hearing.

Last month, he was to go on trial on several drug and obstructing-justice charges. That day, he was arraigned on new charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of crack cocaine, trafficking in cocaine, obstructing justice, and obstructing official business.

Police said Mr. Powell was with Robert Jobe when they were stopped Feb. 21 by Detective Keith Dressel and two other undercover officers in North Toledo. Mr. Powell is accused of being armed with a loaded handgun and carrying crack cocaine when he was arrested.

Monday, the Jobe youth was certified to stand trial as an adult and was booked into the jail on a charge of aggravated murder.
