Customers hoping to stock up on groceries this morning at the Bassett s Market store at 5700 Monroe St. in Sylvania s Starlite Plaza had to shop elsewhere.

The store, operated by Port Clinton grocer Mike Bassett, has closed after less than two years of business.

We could never get it off the ground, said Connie Roberts, marketing director. It s a very tired shopping center and there is a lot of competition in the area.

Mr. Bassett informed employees Tuesday. Most of the store s 40 employees will be transferred to other Bassett stores, which are unaffected by the closing, Ms. Roberts said.

The pharmacy of the shuttered store will remain open another two weeks, and bakery and deli orders will be filled from a central kitchen that was moved last night from Starlite Plaza to the chain s Perrysburg store in the River Place Shopping Center.

Customers can arrange to pick up orders by calling the Sylvania store at 419-882-0051 and entering 0 for the operator.

The Sylvania and Perrysburg stores were locations of the Farmer Jack chain, which left the Toledo market. Bassett s also has stores in Port Clinton and Bellevue.
