They came. They sipped. They voted. They did not pick Toledo s water as the best-tasting.

Mayors attending the 75th annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors yesterday chose St. Louis tap water as the best-tasting city water in America, a conference spokesman said.

Toledo, which labels its drinking water the Champagne of the Great Lakes, was among five finalists out of 93 entries, Mayor Carty Finkbeiner announced Friday.

More than 200 mayors participated in the five-day meeting in Los Angeles. They participated in voluntary blind tests for taste, clarity, and aroma. Mr. Finkbeiner did not attend the meeting.

The other finalists were Anaheim and Long Beach, Calif., and Colorado Springs.
