Toledo City Council members this afternoon approved seeking a change in the city s charter that would require the mayor to send them a balanced budget each year.

The proposal which still requires the mayor s signature before it could be placed on the ballot for voters later this year was pushed recently after council members were forced to trim more than $10 million from the city s $241.7 million budget.

To fill the gap, council members made cuts that included garbage pickup fees and closing city pools.

The charter amendment proposal had been introduced by Councilman Frank Szollsi.
