A central Toledo man who authorities said tried to steal a police sergeant's 9mm handgun and hit him in the head with a police radio was arraigned in Toledo Municipal Court yesterday.

Arthur Sailes, Jr., 41, of 121 Gibbons St. was charged with assault on a police officer, aggravated robbery, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. He is being held in the Lucas County jail in lieu of $20,000 bond.

Sgt. Sean Jones approached Sailes, who was walking near Airline Avenue and Wayne Street carrying a black purse about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, to investigate a possible theft, a police report said.

Sergeant Jones ordered Sailes to stop, but he fled into his residence in the 100 block of Gibbons Street, where the sergeant grabbed him, police said.

Sailes pulled away from the sergeant and attempted to take Sergeant Jones' handgun during a struggle, police said. The suspect then took Sergeant Jones' radio and began striking him in the head and face, police said.

Sergeant Jones struck Sailes in the head multiple times with open-hand stuns, a police report said. Another officer arrived, hit the suspect in the abdomen with several closed-hand stuns, and arrested him, police said.
