Finkbeiner wants to buy smoke alarms to give out

12/19/2007

Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner yesterday said he has introduced legislation to spend $30,000 to purchase 3,000 smoke detectors to be distributed to people who need them.

The Toledo Fire Department offered free smoke detectors on Dec. 6, a week after a West Toledo house fire killed a mother and her three children.

Mayor Finkbeiner said the department exhausted its supply during the giveaway. He stressed that the program is important enough to warrant buying more. The legislation is scheduled for a Jan. 2 city council vote.

The Nov. 28 blaze at 4046 Lyman Ave. killed a mother, her two daughters, and her son.

Eleven children have died in house fires statewide in 2007, Mr. Finkbeiner said.
