Woman gets 6 months for scholarship fund theft

MONROE An Ida Township woman who stole money from a college scholarship fund named in memory of a local soldier killed fighting in Iraq has been sentenced to six months in jail.

Renee Seger, 42, was sentenced Friday in Monroe County Circuit Court.

Judge Joseph Costello, Jr., also ordered Seger to pay $4,050 in restitution to replace the money she diverted from the trust fund named in honor of Pfc. Nicholas Greer.

Seger pleaded guilty July 11 to one count of felony agent or trustee embezzlement, a crime that carries a sentence of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The fund was begun by the soldier s mother, Kelly Greer, to provide scholarships for Monroe County residents desiring degrees in computer science.

Private Greer, 21, was shot and killed Oct. 7, 2005, while on patrol in western Iraq. He had been in the country for two weeks.
