Owner of funeral home sentenced in tax case

11/6/2008

The owner of a local funeral home was sentenced yesterday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on misdemeanor convictions for withholding tax dollars.

David Jasin, 52, the owner of David R. Jasin Funeral Home, 5300 Summit St., was sentenced by Judge James Bates to six months in the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio. The judge suspended the jail time.

Mr. Jasin was placed on two years of probation and was ordered to pay the state of Ohio the $77,770.08 owed in taxes.

He pleaded no contest Sept. 25 to three counts of attempt to commit unauthorized use of property, all misdemeanors. Three felony counts of failure to remit sales taxes were dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, Mr. Jasin failed to remit sales taxes collected from his customers. The state said the withholdings occurred from June, 2005, through the end of 2007.
