Maumee board plans more discussion of bus service

The Maumee Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the board office, 716 Askin St., to continue discussing whether to suspend high school bus service in January.

On Monday, the board discussed whether the Ohio Department of Education would allow the service to end as soon as January to soften a deficit expected after voters rejected an operating levy that would have generated $2.9 million a year.

The state does not dictate how much notice parents should receive before changes are made in bus service, a state education department spokesman said.

School districts are not required to provide transportation for high school students, but must have service for special education students who require transportation as part of their individual education plans and for vocational students moving between the high school and Penta Career Center.
