Commissioners pass budget that slashes $8.4 million in 2009

The Lucas County Commissioners Monday passed a budget for 2009 that will reduce spending by nearly 6 percent.

Commissioners said the pared-down budget - which amounts to a cut of $8.4 million - reflects decreasing revenue from the federal, state, and city of Toledo, as well as a fall off in revenue from construction and housing activity.

"We're actually seeing a reduction in spending in the general fund," said commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak. "Government is getting smaller."

Commissioners approved the $141,786,863 budget by a 2-1 vote, with Ben Konop in opposition.

Mr. Konop said he was worried the budget would reduce the number of road patrols by sheriff's deputies, jeopardizing public safety.

He also criticized spending in areas that he has long been critical of, including money for the Lucas County Improvement Corp. and for window repairs at the county-owned 701 Adams St.
