Michigan woman dies in crash on War Road

MONROE - A Newport, Mich., woman suffered fatal injuries Wednesday when two cars collided on ice-covered War Road north of Post Road in Frenchtown Township, authorities said.

Karly Vass, 27, the driver of one of the cars, was taken to Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe, where she later was pronounced dead, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Ms. Vass was driving north on War about 10:30 a.m. when she failed to round a curve in the road and lost control of the car, causing it to slide sideways and cross the center line, sheriff's deputies said.

The Vass car then was struck in the passenger side by a car driven south on War by Joan Beaton, 40, whose husband, John, 52, was in the front passenger seat, deputies said.

The Beatons, also of Newport, were transported to Mercy Memorial, where they were listed in fair condition Wednesday, deputies said. A hospital spokesman said yesterday that she had no information about anyone by that last name.

Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt, deputies said. The crash remained under investigation by the sheriff's office, which released no further information.
