The extreme cold weather could have contributed to power outages Friday in downtown Toledo and scattered sites throughout northwest Ohio, a Toledo Edison spokesman said.

Power to the National City Bank building, at 405 Madison Ave., and SeaGate Convention Centre, 401 Jefferson Ave., was interrupted. The power was restored restored late Friday afternoon.

The Safety Building lost power Friday morning, but that has since been restored.

Spokesman Richard Wilkins said issues with underground cables are to blame for the morning power outages.

Fewer than 100 homes throughout northwest Ohio lost power, which was down to one or two by the afternoon, Mr. Wilkins said.

The arctic-like temperatures can cause metal to become brittle and also slow or stop utility equipment that has moving parts.

It s cold and it s been cold for a long time, Mr. Wilkins said. We haven t had a thaw.
