Four area counties recently were awarded federal brownfield financing with the help of Soil and Materials Engineers Inc. of Maumee, the company has announced.

Soil and Materials Engineers teamed with 11 communities in Ohio and Michigan to secure federal grants of more than $6 million for brownfield redevelopment projects. The company used its grant-writing experience to help secure the funding and will support the communities throughout the projects.

In Ohio, both Defiance and Ottawa counties received $200,000 in EPA Community-wide Assessment/Hazardous Substances grants.

In Michigan, a total of $2.5 million was awarded to the Downriver Community Conference and Wayne and Monroe counties in the form of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Assessment Coalition grant and a Communitywide Revolving Loan Fund grant. Lenawee County also received a $200,000 EPA Communitywide Assessment/Hazardous Substances grant.
