Perrysburg police chief plans to retire in June

5/27/2009

Citing personal reasons, Perrysburg Police Chief Rick Gilts said he plans to retire June 12.

Chief Gilts, 54, joined the department in 1976 as a dispatcher and parking meter attendant while he was still in the police academy. He became a patrol officer that year and moved up the ranks over the years, becoming acting chief in 2003 when former Chief Nelson Evans, who is now the mayor, retired. He was named chief in February, 2004.

Chief Gilts cited the death of his 19-year-old son, Jaryd, in February as a major factor in his decision to retire. I find my mind and heart are more on my home than on my job, and that s not fair to those who work with or for me, he said.

Mayor Evans has named Lt. Dan Paez acting chief. A reception for Chief Gilts is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. June 12 at the Carranor Hunt & Polo Club, 502 East Second St.
