BRADNER, Ohio - A Portage, Ohio-area man was killed when a car he was in went into a pond west of this Wood County community, authorities said.

Larry Sabo, 51, who was trapped in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which occurred about 10:10 p.m. Sunday, Wood County sheriff's deputies said. He was a rear-seat passenger in a car driven by Lana Rose, 46, of Wayne, Ohio. Both Ms. Rose and front-seat passenger Dale Rose, Jr., 52, also of Wayne, escaped unhurt, sheriff's deputies said.

The car was northbound on private property near Wayne and Douglas roads in Montgomery Township when the driver failed to see the pond and drove into it, deputies said.

Mr. Sabo was trapped when the car became submerged. Two Wayne firefighters pulled Mr. Sabo from the vehicle, but attempts to resuscitate him failed, deputies said.

The incident remains under investigation.
