Vote expected Nov. 4 on deer cull in Ottawa Hills

10/8/2009

Ottawa Hills Village Council is expected to vote on a proposed ordinance at its Nov. 4 meeting that would set the stage for a deer cull inside the 2 -square-mile community.

The village has banned hunting within its limits since 1940. The ordinance under consideration would narrowly modify that ban to permit council to hire a firm or individual to selectively kill deer.

Hungry deer have been invading neighborhoods, damaging property and posing potential safety hazards, officials have said. The village has a request pending with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for permission to cull up to 50 deer.

The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Council meets Wednesday that week instead of its usual Monday because Nov. 3 is Election Day.
