Sylvania Township inks deal for fire station land

10/22/2009

Sylvania Township trustees have a written agreement to buy from Toledo Hospital nearly one acre off North McCord Road near Central Avenue for $131,000 as the site for a new fire station.

Township Administrator Hugh Thomas said Wednesday the sale is contingent on several factors, including approval of a zoning change from commercial to public land use, or C-3 to S-1.

Trustees have requested the zoning change and the matter has been sent to the township's zoning commission for consideration, he said.

Construction of the fire station to replace Fire Station No. 2 along Central Avenue near McCord is one of several fire department upgrades planned or completed by the township.

Groundbreaking was this week for a new Fire Station No. 3, and renovations to Fire Station No. 4 recently were wrapped up.

Cost for the new No. 3 station is about $1.4 million, and the new No. 2 station likely will run about that, Mr. Thomas said.

The selected site for Fire Station No. 2, which will undergo feasibility studies before the sale is finalized, is at 2920 North McCord, as split, and 3004 North McCord.

The No. 2 Fire Station project likely will go out for bid this winter with construction underway in early spring, Mr. Thomas said.

Estimated completion is by the end of next year.

The current No. 2 fire station probably would be demolished, Mr. Thomas said, and the site cleared, but no decisions have been made.
