Woman hurt in crash on I-75 in Monroe dies

MONROE - A woman died as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident on I-75 Wednesday that closed the southbound lanes for 90 minutes.

Judith F. Simms, 59, of Wyandotte, Mich., was pronounced dead at Mercy Memorial Hospital after the 9:52 a.m. accident, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. She was wearing a seat belt.

She was a passenger in a sport utility vehicle that went out of control after entering southbound I-75 at the North Dixie Highway ramp. The SUV spun sideways in the center lane and was struck by a motor home, deputies said.

After the impact, the SUV came to rest in the left lane, while the motor home was brought to a stop on the right shoulder.

The driver of the SUV, Robert L. Simms, 64, also of Wyandotte, was transported to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition.

Robert J. Green, 45, the driver of the motor coach, and his passenger, Sandy Green, 44, both of Howell, Mich., did not require medical attention at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.
