Williams County sheriff recalls laid-off deputy

10/24/2009

BRYAN — After laying off eight employees in April, Williams County Sheriff Kevin Beck said Friday one deputy will be called back to work with help from a federal grant.

The sheriff's office received an $82,000 grant from the Office of Criminal Justice Services to pay the wages and benefits for a deputy to work on a drug task force for 15 months.

Sheriff Beck said a deputy would be reassigned to the Multi-Area Narcotics Task Force and another recalled from layoff. A second laid-off deputy will be recalled because the county is no longer paying unemployment compensation for the deputies and can use that money for the deputy's salary.
