A man was hurt seriously early Thursday after an argument ended with his ex-girlfriend's father stabbing him, authorities said.

Donell Smith, Jr., 19, of 2144 Scottwood Ave., was stabbed in the abdomen and required surgery at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, police said. A hospital spokesman said she had no information on a patient by that name.

The suspect, Odonald Fowler, 61, of 247 Kevin Place, was held at the Lucas County jail yesterday on a felonious assault charge. Bond is pending a court appearance later Thursday.

The problem began about midnight, with an argument between Mr. Smith and his ex-girlfriend's current boyfriend, Charles Moses, 29, of central Toledo, at the Kevin Place residence the woman shares with her father, Mr. Fowler. Mr. Smith fired three or four gunshots at Mr. Moses' sport-utility vehicle, police said. Mr. Smith fled the scene on foot as police arrived..

Mr. Smith returned to the Kevin Place home a half hour later, and was confronted by Mr. Fowler, who was identified in the emergency call as the woman's father, Lucas County EMS said.

Mr. Fowler stabbed Mr. Smith in the abdomen with a kitchen knife, and emergency crews found Mr. Smith bleeding on the front porch of the home, police said.
