Tuition boost OK'd at Monroe County Community College

3/24/2010

MONROE — Monroe County Community College students will pay more tuition in August when they return to campus for the fall semester.

On Monday, the board of trustees unanimously approved instructional fee increases ranging from $5 to $10 and designed to offset declining property tax and state revenue.

The new hourly fees will be $72 for county students, $124 for students living in Michigan but outside the county, and $128 for out-of-state residents.

The college is projecting a loss of up to $2 million in property tax values and state revenue for the 2010-11 fiscal year.

The rate increase is the first since March, 2008, when fees per credit hour rose by $3 for county residents and $6 for others.

Last year the college changed tuition billing from a credit-hour basis to charging for the number of hours a student is in class.
