Bellevue misses budget deadline over veto

4/1/2010

BELLEVUE, Ohio — This Sandusky County city missed yesterday's deadline to adopt a budget for 2010 after Mayor David Kile vetoed the plan adopted by City Council Monday.

The mayor said he opposed the spending plan because it dipped into the city's carryover fund by $483,000, it eliminated the city engineer's position, and because council has refused his recommendation to have an independent audit done to analyze city spending.

Council met for a work session Tuesday night but took no action on the budget. City Auditor Steve Smith said he authorized the city payroll for this week but cannot pay any bills until a budget is in place.

Council, which meets again April 12, cannot vote to override the mayor's veto for at least 10 days.
