Toledo Chamber opposes 0.75% levy for schools

5/1/2010

The Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce released a statement yesterday opposing a 0.75 percent income tax levy requested by Toledo Public Schools.

The levy — Issue 3 on Tuesday's ballot — would be imposed on the earned income of Toledo residents who live inside the school district. Pension, unemployment, and Social Security income and benefits would be exempted.

The chamber's board of trustees issued a three-page statement outlining its opposition, saying “the income tax, if passed, will not address the … financial issues that are currently plaguing the district.”

TPS is facing a projected $30 million deficit next fiscal year. The levy would raise $18.1 million annually.

The chamber has a membership of about 3,000 Toledo-area businesses.
