MONROE - Authorities have released the identity of a pedestrian struck and killed by a Norfolk Southern freight train early yesterday.
Carrie Nunn, 32, of LaSalle Township was sitting on the tracks east of the 600 block of Eastchester Street about 5 a.m. when she was struck by the northbound train, Monroe police Sgt. Thomas Mohrbach said.
The incident occurred about three blocks from the nearest street crossing and is being investigated as a suicide. Sergeant Mohrbach said the engineer saw no indication that the woman tried to move off the tracks.
"There are some circumstances that lead us to believe this was a suicide," Sergeant Mohrbach said.
"She was sitting in the middle of the tracks facing away from the approaching train."
A ruling in the woman's death is pending the outcome of an autopsy being performed by the Wayne County Medical Examiner.
