Public remembrance slated for ‘Lud' Ashley

9/10/2010

A public remembrance for Thomas “Lud” Ashley, the longtime Toledo congressman, will be from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Toledo Club, his son Meredith said.

Mr. Ashley died June 15. He represented Toledo in Congress from 1955-1980.

A private service was held earlier in Washington, at which former President George H.W. Bush spoke. The two were friends since their student days at Yale University in the 1940s.

Mr. Ashley was nationally known for his work on landmark housing, anti-poverty, and civil rights legislation. Still, he was most proud of the ways he was able to help his hometown, his son said in June.
