BRIGHTON, Mich. - Authorities Monday said two Fremont residents were among the five people killed in a head-on crash on U.S. 23 north of Ann Arbor Sunday.

Cynthia Skutt, 62, who was driving a sport utility vehicle, and Alfred King, 56, her front-seat passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene after their southbound SUV was struck by a northbound Toyota Prius that had crossed the median about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Green Oak Charter Township police said. A small fire in the SUV was put out with a portable fire extinguisher, police said.

The crash occurred in Livingston County's Green Oak Township. Officers did not say why the car crossed the center line. The crash remained under investigation last night.

Also killed were three of the four Michigan teens in the car: Matthew Kolstoe, 18, of Okemos, the driver; Heather Comstock, 19, also of Okemos, the front-seat passenger, and Sarina Seger of Williamston, who was in the rear seat. Mr. Kolstoe died in surgery in the University of Michigan Hospital. Ms. Comstock and Ms. Seger were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Three children in the SUV's back seat, ages 10, 5, and 3, were at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, for serious injuries, township police said. Their names were not released.

The fourth person in the Prius, an 18-year-old from Okemos whose name was not released, was listed in critical condition in the University of Michigan Hospital, police said.
