Ex-Perrysburg doctor sentenced for fraud
10/22/2010BOWLING GREEN — A former Perrysburg physician who was convicted of insurance fraud was sentenced Friday to five years' community control and ordered to pay $234,144 to insurance companies she bilked.
Stacey Royal, 45, of McMurray, Pa., also was ordered by Wood County Common Pleas Judge Alan Mayberry to pay the cost of the investigation by the Wood County Prosecutor's Office, the Ohio Department of Insurance, and a corporate recovery firm.
On the fourth day of her trial in August, Royal pleaded guilty to two counts of telecommunications fraud, four counts of insurance fraud, four counts of theft, and one count of engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity. She had been charged with billing insurance companies for more than $900,000 in bogus claims through her Royal Treatment Urgent Care on West South Boundary Street between October, 2004, and July, 2009.
A co-defendant in the case, Christopher Davis, 34, was convicted after a trial in September of insurance fraud, complicity to theft, and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity. He is to be sentenced Nov. 5.
As part of Royal's sentence, she was ordered to perform 300 hours of community service, obtain mental-health counseling, notify all medical boards of her felony convictions, pay a $10,000 fine, and have no contact with Davis except as it relates to their two children.
