Wood County officers swap shopping for bells

BOWLING GREEN — Rather than shopping with kids, some Wood County Sheriff's deputies will be ringing the bell for the Salvation Army this season.

Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn said he decided to shelve the “North Pole Patrol” — Wood County's version of Shop with a Cop — this year because of poor attendance by both the selected children and law officers.

The sheriff's office and other Wood County police departments raised nearly $15,000 a year for three years to give about 200 children about $80 for Christmas shopping.
