GREEN SPRINGS, Ohio — A Green Springs resident was killed Sunday when he was struck by one of two vehicles that collided near railroad tracks in the village and was hurled into a stop sign along State Rt. 19 near Kansas Street, the Ohio Highway patrol said.

The pedestrian, Keith A. Wheeler, 55, was flown from the scene to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Troopers with the Sandusky post said a 2005 Pontiac Vibe driven by Carolyn Young, 75, of Green Springs, was struck by a 1999 GMC Jimmy driven by Cody Weidenheft, 16, of Bellevue, shortly before 2 p.m.

The Jimmy, northbound on Route 19, had crossed the tracks and went left of center. It struck Ms. Young's vehicle, which was traveling in the opposite direction.

The Jimmy then went off the left side of the road, hit Mr. Wheeler, who was walking north, then went back on the road and overturned on its left side.

The impact sent Mr.Wheeler airborne into the sign, troopers said.

Ms. Young was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the crash, troopers said.

Mr. Wiedenheft, and his passenger, Holly K. Stohl, 17, Clyde, also wearing seat belts, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Green Springs Police, Green Springs Fire, Republic EMS, and Life Flight assisted at the scene.
