Public hearing set about ex-King Road landfill

12/30/2010

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 10 to discuss a plan to reduce contamination at the former King Road Landfill in Sylvania.

The meeting will be in Room A of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library's Holland branch, 1032 South McCord Road. The public can submit comments for the record regarding the state's proposed remediation plan.

The revised plan recommends adding more soil cover to the top of the landfill; adding vegetative cover; maintaining access controls to prevent public contact with restricted areas; removing ditch sediment; establishing a “no well zone”; and making sure all local residences and businesses in the zone are connected to a municipal drinking-water supply. In addition, existing methane gas monitoring and leachate collection would be continued.

The 104-acre site is at 3535 King Road. Waste-disposal operations began in 1954 and ended in 1976. A waste-transfer station operated near the main gate from 1980-91.

OEPA also will accept written comments through Jan. 17. They should be sent to Paul Jayko, site coordinator, OEPA Northwest District Office, 347 North Dunbridge Road, Bowling Green, 43402. They also can be faxed to 419-352-3038 or e-mailed.

A copy of the preferred plan is at the Sylvania branch of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, 6749 Monroe St.
