A Toledo woman's fingertip was bitten off as she tried to calm an alleged assault on her daughter early Sunday outside a West Toledo bar, according to Toledo Police.

Carrie Gill, 40, of Atlantic Avenue in South Toledo, was trying to stop her daughter's boyfriend from attacking her daughter when he bit off the tip of Ms. Gill's index finger, she told police.

Police said the assault occurred about 2 a.m. outside Li'l Sheba bar at 1380 West Alexis Rd.

A warrant was issued Sunday by Toledo Municipal Court for the arrest of Robert E. Boone Jr., 23, of 551 Crittenden Ave.

According to a Toledo Police report, Mr. Boone was intoxicated and abusive toward Ms. Gill's 21-year-old daughter inside the bar where they had gone to celebrate the new year. After closing time they stepped outside where Mr. Boone allegedly slapped the daughter. Ms. Gill told police she put her hand on Mr. Boone's shoulder and he bit down on her hand, taking off about an inch of her index finger.

Ms. Gill said she recovered the fingertip and took it to the emergency room at Toledo Hospital but doctors there were unable to reattach it. She said she will have to see a plastic surgeon.

“He attacked her and I tried to help her and he did this to me. I tried to pull him off her and he bit my finger off,” said Ms. Gill, whose job involves operating a machine in an injection molding factory. “I'm off work. This has really affected me badly.”

Mr. Boone has prior convictions in Toledo Municipal Court, including disorderly conduct and obstructing official business.

He pleaded no contest to “disorderly conduct recklessly by creating a condition that is physically offensive or a present risk,” a reduction from the original charge of domestic violence, in municipal court on July 23 and was found guilty. Mr. Boone was sentenced to 30 days in jail and then given one year's probation, including the condition that he show good behavior in the future and that he take anger management classes.
