An assistant professor at Bowling Green State University has filed a discrimination lawsuit against the university, claiming that he was passed over for advancement because he is Chinese.

Canchu Lin of Perrysburg filed the complaint this week in the U.S. District Court in Toledo. The lawsuit asks for compensation and damages of more than $1 million as well as being granted tenure and a position of associate professor.

The suit alleged that Mr. Lin was denied a committee position in which he expressed interest and that a subsequent recommendation that he receive tenure and associate professor status was withdrawn.

He claimed he was denied the advancement “based on his race and national origin, and in retaliation for having complained about discrimination.”

The case was assigned to Judge Jack Zouhary.
