Fishing on thick ice

1/17/2011

Toledoans Dale Roth, left, and John Poirier fish on a private lake covered with 10 inches of ice in Ottawa Lake. They measured the water temperature Monday at about 29 degrees. Warmer temperatures are coming, however: The National Weather Service issued a freezing-rain advisory for Monday night and Tuesday morning in the Toledo area. An approaching storm was expected to mix with snow, then change to light freezing rain overnight. As temperatures warm Tuesday, the precipitation will change to rain before a cold front comes through and snow returns. Up to a tenth of an inch of freezing rain is possible, forecasters said. The advisory states that icing will be insufficient to affect trees or power lines, but it could make roads slippery, including during Tuesday's morning rush hour.
