PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio — The National Park Service will host its third annual “Return of the Mayfly” festival Saturday at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial on Middle Bass Island.
It will educate visitors on “those pesky insects we all love to hate” and their role in the ecosystem, said Blanca Stransky, memorial superintendent.
Fish, snakes, and mayflies will be in attendance. Activities start at 11 a.m., including “Build a Bug” and “Bug Mask” crafts, hands-on water-pollution testing, and mayfly viewing under microscopes provided by Ohio State University Stone Laboratory. A presentation on Lake Erie invertebrates by Ken Krieger, Heidelberg University, Tiffin, senior research scientist, will be at 2 p.m.
Admission is free.
