FREMONT — A Clyde motorist died and his passenger was injured Thursday after his car left the roadway and hit a utility pole.
Troopers at the Fremont post of the Ohio Highway Patrol said David Kirshman, 72, of Clyde was eastbound on U.S. 20 just west of Clyde about 6:05 p.m. when he drove off the right side of the road. His car continued to drift right as he drove along a ditch. Witnesses reported that they did not see brake lights before the car hit the pole, troopers said.
Neither he nor his passenger, Carolyn D. Brown, 69, also of Clyde, were wearing seat belts. Both were taken by medical helicopter to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where Mr. Kirshman was pronounced dead at 8 p.m. Troopers said Ms. Brown appeared to suffer injuries to her hands and face. A hospital spokesman had no information on anyone named Carolyn Brown.
Troopers are investigating why the car left the road. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, troopers said.
An autopsy will be performed by the Lucas County coroner’s office.
Clyde is about 40 miles southeast of Toledo.
