BOWLING GREEN -- Saying they needed more information, the Wood County Planning Commission this week tabled a request by the Diocese of Toledo to rezone 20 acres on Five Point Road in Middleton Township that contains an old cemetery.

The diocese sought to rezone the parcel from agricultural to R-3 residential and set aside 3.7 acres where the cemetery is thought to be in a cemetery conservation easement. Planning Director Dave Steiner recommended the request be denied because the easement would not ensure the cemetery land remain undeveloped. He said the panel asked him to seek a legal opinion from the Wood County Prosecutor's Office about what may be done on land which included a cemetery.

George Oravecz, principal of Oravecz & Associates, which submitted the plan, , said he would talk with the diocese about requesting the land be rezoned as a planned unit development, which would provide more control over development. The next meeting is May 1.
