The Lucas County Veterans Commission has begun providing identification cards to honorably discharged veterans.

Lee Armstrong, the commission's executive director, said the move was in response to requests from veterans who wanted an additional form of ID or who wanted to be able to take advantage of discounts offered at area retailers and restaurants for veterans. More than 150 ID cards have been issued in recent weeks.

"We're extremely proud of [veterans] and we want to say, 'Thank you,' " said Carol Contrada, a Lucas County commissioner, at a news conference Thursday.

Mr. Armstrong said the cards also offer a guarantee to area retailers that the individual is indeed a veteran and their service has been verified by the commission.

Vets can obtain a card by bringing in a copy of their DD-214 and another photo ID to the Lucas County VSC, 1301 Monroe St., Suite 180, from 9 to 11 a.m., or from 2 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is no charge for the card. For more information, call 419-213-6090.
