TIFFIN -- Seneca County commissioners voted 2-1 Thursday to accept Mohawk Nursery's proposal for landscaping the former site of the 1884 courthouse.

Commissioner Dave Sauber cast the lone dissenting vote. Even though the bed and sales tax figures have increased from this time last year, Mr. Sauber said he opposes spending $6,518 on "plants and bushes" in light of the recent $500,000 reduction in county revenue. That dramatic loss to the county's budget stems from a reduction of detainees in the jail's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement program.

Commissioners Ben Nutter and Jeff Wagner voted to proceed with the site beautification.
