A fund-raiser to help pay for the veterinary care of Mamas, a Toledo dog who was shot twice by a drive-by shooter, is closing in on its goal.

Spearheading the effort is Toledo's PETBull Project, a group of "pit-bull" owners, dog lovers, and trainers who aim to prevent animal cruelty, including dog fighting in the Toledo and surrounding areas.

About $2,100 of the $2,600 tab has been raised via an account at Fifth Third Bank, PETBull Executive Director Cindy Reinsel said. Those wanting to donate can still go into any branch and ask for "Mamas Vet Fund" under a memorial benefit account.

Dr. Gary Thompson of West Surburban Veterinary Hospital performed the surgery on the "pit bull"-type dog, who was shot in both front legs. The dog, owned by Renee Siefker, was being walked June 30 in the 600 block of Oak Street when it was shot.
