MONROE -- The Michigan Tobacco Quit Line has begun offering free nicotine-replacement products for people who want to quit smoking or chewing tobacco.

The program offers supplies for up to eight weeks of nicotine patches, gum, or lozenges to tobacco users who are 18 or older and meet basic health requirements. The patches, gum, or lozenges are available to Michigan residents on a first-come, first-served basis with no consideration for income or insurance status.

Interested people should call the Quit Line at 1-800-784-8669. The phone line is open from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

To be eligible, callers must enroll in quit-smoking coaching services with Michigan Tobacco Quit. Those who enroll will be provided with a personal coach who will assist in setting up a "quit date" and "quit plan" and will offer on-going support with up to four telephone coaching sessions around the caller's "quit date."
