Wind gusts prompt scattered outages
Push of cold air leaves some in dark
10/14/2012More than 2,800 Toledo Edison Co. customers were without power Sunday night after gusty winds created by a cold front moving into Ohio downed power lines.
Trees and limbs fell on power lines in parts of northwest Ohio, including in Putnam County, where an undetermined number of homes and businesses without electricity, the sheriff’s office said.
In Seneca County, where the wind knocked down trees and limbs, fewer than 200 customers were without power, according to AEP Ohio, the service provider.
Toledo Edison Co. reported 2,839 customers in Lucas County shortly before midnight because of limbs and trees falling on lines. Toledo police reported several neighborhoods were without electric service.
The National Weather Service said a cold front moved into Ohio, creating a low pressure system that generated wind gusts of 45 to 50 miles an hour in the Putnam County area. Wind gusts were expected to taper off by morning, reaching 10 to 15 miles an hour.
Temperatures in Toledo reached 71 degrees at 6 p.m. Sunday, but were expected to fall overnight to the mid 40s in places.
